Meet the guide that fixes Nikon’s marketing problem and tells you how to use the ZR for still photography. From the beginning, Nikon has emphasized the video aspects of this camera, totally neglecting how it can be used as an advanced still camera. Configuring and Using the Nikon ZR for Still Photography walks you through button customization, menu mapping, and smart hardware and lens choices so your camera behaves exactly how you want it to.

Because the ZR doesn’t have a viewfinder and has only a few buttons, it’s imperative that you understand how to bring all the still photography features up to where you can access them quickly via tap of the screen or press of one of the few buttons. In his no-nonsense way, professional photographer Thom Hogan dissects exactly how the ZR works and the best ways to configure it for taking images instead of recording videos.

If you want sharper focus, cleaner exposure, and the best possible image quality, this book turns technical settings into simple, repeatable routines. Hands-on tips get you better results without the guesswork.

Written for curious beginners and experienced photographers alike, this eBook is a patient teacher: clear, actionable steps mean you’ll be mastering your ZR for still photography in no time.

This book is different than Thom's Complete Guides in that it only tackles the primary problems that most users have with a new camera: how the heck do you get it configured to work the way you want it to work, and how do you then use it?

Thus, you'll find that this isn't a do-all, tell-all, expose-all tome like Thom Hogan's Complete Guides have been. Nope, this book is a get-out-your-camera and read along to get your ZR set exactly right for your still photography tasks. Configuring and Using the Nikon ZR for Still Photography tackles the following some clear steps:

  • Fix some defaults
  • Make all your one-time settings
  • Customize the camera controls
  • Settle into your basic shooting options (exposure, focus, and more)
  • Get hooked up to your mobile device
  • Use your ZR for various still photography tasks
  • Save your settings for later convenient retrieval

Along the way Thom deals with things like how Nikon has organized the menu system and how to navigate it more quickly, how to set up top button focus (and some supporting focus button options, as well as picking your initial preferred AF-Area mode), how to set up the camera to evaluate exposure, and much, much more. Thom describes when to use higher ISO values and some of the other major settings, but again, this book doesn't go into the detailed level as in the Complete Guides

The ZR has some unique things that need more explaining, such as HEIF, and Pixel shift shooting. Those, too, are covered in the book, as are the most recent Picture Controls. The book also tackles how to charge your battery (the camera doesn't come with a charger), what cards to use in the camera, and everything you need to know about the new autofocus system. Thom offers a number of customization settings if you're not sure how to best set up the camera for your use, and he explains how to set up the ML-L7 wireless remote as well as SnapBridge.

Because this book takes a far simpler approach than the Complete Guides, we're able to use the ePub format to publish it as a download, which makes it perfect for any reader device, big or small. It's been optimized for Apple Books (macOS, iOS, and iPadOS), but it works with other e-readers, as well, including mobile and Kindle devices (which now use ePub instead of Amazon's proprietary format). The provided PDF file works great on computer displays, and you can output a personal copy to your printer, if needed.
