Nikon versus Nikkor: the Nikkor brand name for lenses was introduced in 1932, and was an attempt at phonetically westernizing the then short corporate name (Nikko, short for Nippon Kogaku, which means Japan Optics). The overall company later took on the Nikon name, but all lenses made by Nikon are currently labeled Nikkor.
