Thom's Commentary: Nikon’s made a number of variable aperture telephoto zooms over its history. The general fault most found with them is that they were good at the wider end and weak at the long end. Surprise, this 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 is better than good at the wide end, it's downright excellent. And it gives up very little at the long end, too. Indeed, this lens tolerates the optional 1.4x teleconverter well enough to put a lot of 500-600mm primes on notice. This lens is an S-line, and gets the full complement of S-line adds: weather-sealing, extra lens control ring, and OLED information display. It also adds a range limiter and a full set of L-Fn2 buttons (four). On a Z9 this lens is well balanced and the handling is exceptional once you program the rings and buttons. The 100-400mm uses the same rotating tripod collar and removable foot as the 70-200mm f/2.8, which is nice, as we all end up replacing the foot with one that has an Arch-style plate. But it’s also got a hidden Kensington lock point, a nice bonus. Recommended Read Thom's Full Review of the Nikon 100-400mm Lens
