Transitions always have messy parts. One that has caught a couple of new-to-the-Z-System users by surprise is the way firmware updates work. In particular, both the FTZ as well as a couple of Z System lenses have had their own firmware updates. The WT-7 has had a Z specific update. The SB-5000 has had a firmware update to work with the Z's and another to work with the 58mm f/0.95 NOCT.
I've now had to sleuth a couple of oddball bugs for people that turned out to be that one of their firmware items wasn't updated. I'm sure we're going to see more as Nikon continues to add to and expand the Z System.
So just as a reminder, when you get a new Z camera and other related items you should immediately go to Nikon's download Web site and check all of the categories I've marked with a red check below for updates to your gear or their manuals:
If there is a firmware update, download it to your computer, and (usually) extract the binary (.BIN) file. Copy that to the root folder of your storage card, and then with the appropriate item mounted on the camera, use the Firmware Update item in the SETUP menu.
Obviously, in the software category, you generally just install that onto your computer, but it's important to make sure you're up to date, as this, too, has caused a couple of problems I've had to figure out for people. Also, don't discount the Mobile App category. Even though the actual SnapBridge and WMU apps should update on your mobile device—automatically if you've enabled that; if you haven't, you'll need to check the appropriate app store for updates there, too—the documentation in this category on Nikon's download site keeps getting updated, and that information may be useful or necessary to understand new features.
