Thom's commentary: In many respects this f/1.4 lens feels like a redesigned 35mm f/1.8 S. It's nearly the same size and weight as the f/1.8, has a similar minimum focus distance. But this lens is not an S lens, so performance is a little different than previous Nikkor primes. Indeed, this lens seems to perform more like old-school F-mount primes did: sharp center, issues as you move to the corners. Given that it has both a focus and control ring, it strikes me that it was created with videographers in mind more so than still photographers.
