Jason Odell at Luminescentphoto has compiled a short list of how various Z and F mount lenses perform with an IR-converted Z6. This is testing I've been meaning to get around to, but I don't yet have an IR-converted Z body, as I'm waiting to see what the fall releases are before making a decision on which body to convert.
As usual, there are "good" and "bad" lenses, and often has something to do with optical design and element/aperture reflections. The most common flaw I've seen has been a hot spot in the central region at some apertures, as Jason reports. But I've seen other issues, too. Sometimes you need to stop down more to get good acuity with a lens when shooting IR.
Considering a conversion? Here are two reliable conversion companies I've used in the past:
- Lifepixel — located in Washington state; they don't currently list the Z's as an option, but inquire, the list on their site may be out of date
- MaxMax — located in New Jersey, and able to provide a wide range of options
Another company I haven't used that has a good reputation for conversions is Kolarivision, who you might know from some of their camera tear downs.
