Nikon has updated their Lens Road map, so I've updated my Z mount road map page accordingly. The new lenses?
- 12-28mm DX wide angle zoom (18-42mm equivalent)
- 24mm and 26mm compact lenses, the 24mm (36mm equivalent) being DX.
- 400mm and 800mm unspecified, but due to size these are either PF or strongly reduced aperture lenses.
Still unannounced from the previous Road Map:
- 85mm, likely f/1.2 S
- 200-600mm, likely f/5.6-6.3 VR?
- 600mm, likely f/4 S VR, perhaps f/4 S TC VR?
So we have eight future lenses that are somewhat known but not yet announced. That's about the maximum output of one year for Nikon, so perhaps the Road Map is telling us the 2022 releases.
Let's start with DX: Bravo, a little less buzz, buzz going on, as we get a 24mm (essentially the 35mm equivalent) prime and a 12-28mm wide angle zoom. Both are necessary to keep DX even remotely competitive. Still missing would be a 16mm prime, and perhaps some faster aperture mid-range zoom. Some would argue for more, but if Nikon produced those four lenses (two on road map, two not), I'd be out of the buzz, buzz business for awhile.
The 26mm doesn't make much sense to me, though it appears to be a pancake.
The silhouettes of the 400mm and 800mm lenses on the new road map seem to suggest PF lenses. If Nikon were to produce 400mm and 800mm PF lenses in the Z-mount, that would nicely complement the 300mm/500mm F-mount lenses we already have available.
Updated: changes a few minor things based upon new information.
