The Latest Trickle

Nikon today announced a new lens, a reworked version of the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 wide angle zoom. I've added the lens to the current lens database. I believe at least two more lens announcements are coming in the next month or so.

One thing that some are missing is that the new 17-28mm f/2.8, despite being an FX lens, actually makes for a reasonable DX lens, too, as it gives you fast 26-42mm equivalent range, and it's light and small enough to be viable on the Z50.

Nikon also updated their Road Map. Lo and behold we have new lenses there, too:

  • 35mm S line, likely the f/1.2 companion to the 50mm and 85mm lenses.
  • 70-180mm, likely a rebrand of the Tamron f/2.8 lens, thus completing a 67mm filter cycle for Nikon.
  • 135mm S line, likely an f/1.8, and possibly coming with DC capability.

Meanwhile, the 12-28mm DX lens is now identified as PZ, which means Power Zoom. This lens would therefore be primarily targeted at the Z30 user base. Which still leaves the 10-20mm DX need (more landscape and Z50 oriented) uncovered.

You might note how two of the new Road Map lenses dovetail with my recent survey, which identified the need for more action on the telephoto side. In essence, the Road Map now includes the #2 prime and a relative of the #2 zoom you asked for. Coupled with the fact that the #1 zoom is already on the Road Map, it's looking like the telephoto side of the Z-mount is getting plenty of love. Now, about that macro...
