Last Week's Z News (August 13-20)

I’ve started accumulating “small” news announcements into a once-a-week story. This helps me be a little more productive and seems to align with the way most people are coming to this site (once or twice a week, but every week).

Here's last week's news for the Z System:

  • Nikon started a new round of instant savings. For the most part this is simply an extension of previous offers. The big savings (US$300 or more) are on the Z6 II, Z7 II, 24-70mm f/2.8 S, 28-75mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S. These rebates end on September 3rd.
  • Lexar announced 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB SILVER PRO CFexpress Type B cards, as well as a matching SD UHS II series. In terms of sustained speed, it goes (fast to slowest) Diamond, Gold, Silver. The sustained write speed for Silver is 400MB/s, which generally is not fast enough for Z8/Z9 8K raw video. Of course, with somewhat slower transfer speeds, these new cards are less expensive, starting at US$100 for the smallest CFe version.
  • The 180-600mm f/5.6-6.3 VR lens that was originally scheduled to ship earlier in August, was postponed until an end-of-month shipment date. Moreover, I've received hints that this initial shipment may not fulfill even NPS Priority Purchase orders. At this point, I'm considering this new lens "sold out" and any orders placed at this point are likely to have a long delay before they're filled.
  • I received verification that the next shipments entering the US for the Z8 will have been factory checked for both Service Advisories and will not need to be sent into the subsidiary for repair.
  • The Laowa 24mm t/8 2x Macro Probe lens was officially announced and is now available for purchase.
